Reviews...a wonderful blend of magic, mayhem and humour. It is a fabulous children's book and one that adults will enjoy reading with their kids. The whole Ruby concept is witty, bright, magical, clever and very addictive. ...a fast-paced and entertaining story that will appeal to the imagination of children. Jodie Brownlee's characters are well drawn with beautifully developed personalities - especially the magic carpet (with attitude) and the spriggan, Milligan. Ruby Rosemount and the Magic Carpet draws upon classic fable, adventure and fantasy. Think Harry Potter meets Aladdin. Alongside the thrill of Ruby's discoveries about her genie heritage and abilities is a plot with danger, dilemmas and plenty of action. Brownlee keeps the story moving right to the last page.
Young fantasy fans will find this one a nice blend of the familiar (magic carpets, genies, and a magic mail-service) with the unusual (including Hobbit-like creatures called Spriggans who dwell in the sands of the oasis). A great read. Ruby and Jaffa are believable children from different worlds. The action plays at a cinematic pace, and swoops and zips along like the carpet... Throughout the novel the author has had a lovely play with language: a camel called Babaganoosh; the sand people called Spriggans and a parrot/genie/best friend called Avalon. The sequel to Ruby Rosemount and the Magic Carpet is just as lively, imaginative and action-packed as the first novel in the series. Jodie Brownlee has crafted a delightful combination of mystery, adventure and fantasy that will appeal to most young readers. Winged camels, a temperamental magic carpet, a strangler turban, and a cast of colourful (literally) characters make this a charming read. This fun and adventurous book will have you laughing, shaking and trying to perform magic yourself. It really shows that if you believe in yourself and never give up that you can do almost anything. You just have to keep trying. Jodie Brownlee has done an amazing job with this book. It is extremely descriptive. You would nearly believe that you were in the book yourself. It has a great plot line, fabulous scenery, in fact the whole book is absolutely magnificent. This book would most likely be enjoyed by people between the ages of 9 and 12 but almost anyone who would pick it up would love it. I give it 9.5/10. I assure you if you read it you wish it never ends. This 247-page paperback, although aimed at the competent reader in the 10 to 13-year age bracket, kept me interested throughout.
Although guessing that Ruby would rescue the folk imprisoned in the dungeon, I had to read on to find out how she would do this and what would become of the other genies she meets during her adventure. I would recommend this book to those who love the mystic of magical tales and thrill of an adventure! If you like Emily Rodda's books and Harry Potter & the Philospher's Stone, these are the books for you. Read them all!!! The Ruby Rosemount books are available at major book stores or online at Infinitas.
